The Nkhoma Orphan Care Project is run out of the Nkhoma Hospital.  The Project Coordinator is Elias Lameck. The Chairman of Orphans is Rev. J.H. Chimutu.

This is a community based project rather than an orphanage.  The orphans are cared for by guardians, who are often relatives (grandmothers, aunts etc). The project assists the guardians with extra fertilizer, blankets, school fees etc so they can afford to care for the extra children.

In mid 2001, there were approximately 3500 orphans in the project, being cared for by approximately 800 guardians.  The number of orphans is rapdily increasing as more and more people die of AIDS.
